Area Guide to Crayford

Crayford is located in the Borough of Bexley between Bexleyheath and Dartford. Its name was founded due to it being developed by the river Cray near a ford that is no longer used.

This is a place with deep historic roots. Paleolithic, Neolithic, Roman, Saxon and Norman. The battle of Crayford, circa AD456, played a key role in the formation of the Kingdom of England when the Anglo-Saxons (although some sources say the Jutes!) under Hengest beat the Britons led by Prince Vortimer. Prince Vortimer was then poisoned by his step-mother. Another historic fact is that Crayford is mentioned in the Domesday Book.
